James Monroe's Highland

President James Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth Kortright Monroe of New York, owned Highland from 1793 to 1826 and made it their official residence from 1799 to 1823.

On April 1, 2013, we revised the house tour, creating a new experience of the Monroe era wing of the historic house. The new tour focuses on James Monroe's accomplishments during his long career in public service, and highlights the extensive furnishings as part of this story.

James Monroe's Highland is open year-round to visitors to share James Monroe’s “place of comfort and hospitality.” Visitors are invited to enjoy all seasons here, with changing views and special events throughout the year. Come and see the flowering plants and trees in spring, the abundant greenery and productive vegetable garden in the summer, the stunning fall foliage, and the winter serenity, adorned in December with holiday decorations in the house.
