The Jay Mclaren Memorial Trail is a walking/biking trail that goes up into NH. It travels on an old rail bed along the site of a spur connecting Merrimac Square to the Boston & Maine Railroad. It runs north into Newton, NH.
It's a 2 mile recreational trail encompassing 45 acres. Merrimac acquired it when the West Amesbury Branch Railroad( 1873-1972), part of the Boston and Maine railroad line, was abandoned. The railroad branch Ran from Newton Junction, New Hampshire to Merrimac's Center.
Along the way the trail crosses the Powwow River and Cobbler Brook watersheds. The most scenic portions of the trail are at the northern end which includes a marsh view. When the trail crosses into New Hampshire, the trail continues through Newton as the Peanut Trail.
The trails are ideal for walking, biking & horseback riding. No Motorized Vehicles are allowed despite the Mclaren trail Sign where the " NO" is spray painted black that at first glance it looks like is says "motorized Vehicles allowed".
