Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department was incorporated on February 19, 1986. The organization was established to serve the rural Marengo County community of Jefferson. Its service area includes some 84 miles of roadways, including a span of Highway 28 in the Jefferson area, as well as county roads 19, 21, and 57. The department is staffed by volunteers only, who receive no compensation for their time or service. The station is located in the heart of Jefferson, on a lot between Jefferson Community Club and Jefferson Country Store. The Department is inspected and rated by Insurance Service Office (ISO) and engages in training with Alabama Fire College, Emergency Response Services, and other organizations dedicated to the safety of firefighters working to protect their communities.
