More about Jenkins Johnson Gallery

Founded in 1996, Jenkins Johnson Gallery is a national dealer dedicated to the progression of representation in contemporary art. A member of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association and AIPAD, owner Karen Jenkins-Johnson brings over 25 years of experience to the gallery's exhibition program. The San Francisco gallery is located in the Union Square area and has operated for seventeen years in its original location at 464 Sutter Street. The New York gallery is located off The Highline in the heart of New York's Chelsea art district at 521 West 26th Street, Fifth Floor and has operated for eight years.

The gallery is committed to working with museums, private institutions, art collectors and other dealers to progress the careers of the artists we represent. Our current program expands the boundaries of representation by presenting artists who practice in a variety of mediums, including: painting, photography, sculpture, video, glass art, textiles, and digital painting. Emerging artists include Timotheus Tomicek, Adia Millett and Julia Fullerton-Batten. The program also includes mid-career artists such as Julian Opie, Polixeni Papapetrou, Lalla Essaydi, Hiroshi Watanabe, and Nicolas Africano as well as established artists such as Ben Aronson and Scott Fraser. Additionally, the gallery exhibits the work of established 20th century masters including Gordon Parks and Roy DeCarava.

Gallery artists are in the collections of, and have been part of exhibitions at, many museums around the world. Our artists have been acquired by museums and institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Library of Congress, the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), and many others. Their works have been widely published as artist monographs, in art journals, and among critical theory texts. Reviews of the galleries’ exhibitions have appeared in the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, ARTnews, Art in America, The New Yorker, The Huffington Post, The Art Newspapers, and ArtInfo, among many other publications. The galleries have promoted their artists at international art fairs including The Armory Show 2010, Art Miami, Art Platform Los Angeles, Volta NY, Pulse New York, artMKT San Francisco, and Texas Contemporary, among others.

Karen Jenkins-Johnson has an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. Her impact and success in the San Francisco art world emphasizes her dedication to showcasing an outstanding collection of fine art works. The current program offers a fresh contemporary vision and unique perspective. As former President of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association, Ms. Jenkins-Johnson has organized numerous events to benefit the arts community. Art Gallery Week (10 Days: 36 Galleries) in San Francisco and Oakland October 2 -13, 2012; several art walks for Post and Sutter Street galleries in San Francisco; the inaugural Chelsea Art Walk, July 2011. Both galleries showcase a plethora of national and international artists, who work in an array of cultivated processes, artistic mediums, and subject matter. All of the works we show are a part of a continuing discourse on the evolution and method of realist and representational art.
