Jenner Township was created by the Somerset County Court in 1811, and built on land from Quemahoning Township. It was named for Dr. Edward Jenner, the discoverer and advocator of vaccination.
One of the first settlers of Jenner Township was James Wells, a farmer noted for his escape from a tribe of Indians in the fall of 1776. Other original settlers were Isaac Miller, George Lohr, and Jacob Huffman.
Today, Jenner Township is a large, well-populated area of 56 square miles, that encompasses the boroughs of Boswell and Jennerstown.
