Joe Jefferson Playhouse

Located in historic midtown Mobile, Alabama, JJP performed its first show in 1947 and has not ceased since. JJP will continue its mission by offering educational arts opportunities on stage and off thereby continuing to improve the arts experience in Mobile, in Southwest Alabama, and along the Gulf Coast. The JJP currently perform forty five performances per year.

• Date of formation: January 1, 1947.
• Legal structure: Exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code classified as a public charity under section 509(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to JJP are deductible under section 170 of the Code and is qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers or gifts under section 2055, 2106 or 2522 of the Internal Revenue Code.
• Location: 11 South Carlen Street, Mobile, AL 36606.
• Operating since 1947 and incorporated in 1950. JJP moved into the current location in 1961 and the building was renovated to its current state in 1967.
• Hire independently contracted artistic directors and musicians for each show.

Success Factors
• Alabama’s oldest continually-operational community theater.
• Produce shows that appeal to large audiences to fill the 305-seat-capacity theater.
• Currently run by a board of directors with over 100 years of cumulative involvement at JJP.
• Part of the historic district of midtown Mobile.
• Draw volunteers and patrons from all over Mobile and Baldwin Counties.
• Several JJP veteran volunteers including actors have gone on to be successful in fields of performing arts in New York and around the country.
• Use a sophisticated online ticketing system and utilize technology as the leader among community theaters.
