John Brewers Tavern

Who is John Brewer?

Colonel Jonathan Brewer was a veteran of the French and Indian War and a Revolutionary War Hero. He led a regiment named after him at the Battle of Bunker HIll. The regiment consisted of 397 men and was said to have "performed with excellence". Col. Brewer and his Lt. Col. William Buckminster were both wounded at Bunker Hill during the battle for America's freedom.

Col. Brewer was also an innkeeper in Waltham. He owned and operated "The Brewer Tavern" from 1770-1785. The Tavern, built by Samuel Garfield in 1740, was located directly across the street from our Waltham location at the corner of Main and Gore Street on the Gore property. When Jonathan Brewer sold the building it was divided and half of it was moved to where the current John Brewer's Tavern Waltham sits today.

Main Street, once known as the Great Road, has a long history of Taverns. During the 1700's and 1800's there were nine Taverns on this road from Stony Brook to the Watertown line. Samuel Garfield owned the first Tavern in this area in 1701. Other Taverns were named The Bird Tavern, The Green Tavern, and The Stratton Tavern.

In 1998 proprietor Bill Honeycutt opened the first John Brewer's Tavern in Waltham at 39 Main Street/Route20. The Tavern quickly became a favorite gathering place for Waltham and the surrounding communities, known for good food, good service and reasonable prices. In 2008 the second John Brewer's Tavern was opened in Malden at 7 Highland Avenue featuring a large outdoor patio with a full bar and the same good food, prices and service.
