Johnson County Human Services needs and welcomes volunteers for many programs including:
Meals on Wheels: Deliver a nutritious, hot, noon-day meal with a smile to home bound senior adults. You can choose from nine nutrition center locations to find one close to home, work, or school. Deliveries are made from approximately 1045 am – noon. Volunteers deliver once a week as regular drivers, or when they are able as substitute drivers.
Catch-a-Ride : Through the Catch-A-Ride program, volunteers transport residents in their own vehicles to essential appointments in Johnson County.
Birthday Club: Celebrate a client’s special birthday by purchasing a gift or two from a wish list completed by the client.
Helping Hands: Volunteers give clients some assistance with tasks in and around the home. (gardening, organization, mowing grass, painting, sorting mail)
Creative Expressions: Use your artistic abilities to brighten someone's day with cards, placemats, bookmarks, or crafts. It's virtual - volunteer from home, work, or school
Congregate Meal Sites: Assist the Human Services nutrition center staff at any of six locations with the many tasks required to prepare two types a meals each day.
Personal Shopper: Volunteers assist clients with their shopping needs. They may drive clients to retail locations to do minor shopping or take the client's shopping list and payment to a retail location to pick up necessary items.
SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas) This state-supported program helps older residents understand Medicare, supplemental insurance planes, and prescription drug plans. Volunteers receive extensive training to become SHICK counselors.
Office Administration: Provide behind the scenes support at any Human Services office. Duties may include data entry, answering telephones, filing, preparing mailings, and other necessary office tasks.
Outreach: Help Human Services staff meet the needs of low income residents in one of six Outreach Centers, located in Shawnee, Gardner, Spring Hill, Blue Valley, Lenexa, and Mission. Volunteers can provide a hand in stocking and operating food pantries or assist with office administrative tasks.
