Judd's General Store

Judd's offers the experience of a step back into time from its charming and historic architecture, to the glass bottled soda, old fashioned candy, home cooked soups, bread sticks, ice cream, shakes and more. In 1911, Thomas Judd left his partnership in the general mercantile store of Woolley, Lund and Judd to open his own business. (Thomas Judd was born in England and came to Utah in 1864. He helped settle Utah's southwestern "Dixie" region and became a prominent St. George merchant.) Tom Sr. died in 1922. His son, Joseph Judd, operated the store until 1954, when Tom Jr. officially took over. Tom Jr. worked at the store from the time he was in the 6th grade, until he retired in 1988 at the age of 76. Judd's Store was founded as a general mercantile and handled all basic supplies-both groceries and dry goods, including shoes, clothes, groceries, hay, kerosene and fabrics. Customers continue to share their memories of trading eggs for candy or buying their Levi's for $2.00. Gas was even pumped at the front curb. Judd's store still boasts its original shelves, counters, safe and scale. The pure brass, nickel-plated National cash register that once graced the store's counter was donated by Tom Judd in 2001 to the museum planned for the Woodward School. It was always Tom Judd's interest to make sure the store would continue and be of historical significance to the community. The name of the store can never be changed. Judd's continues to be locally owned and operated. For several years the Sandstrom family took great pains to ensure the store and all its memories stay intact..worn counters and all. Currently, the Gulbranson's are committed, as the care takers of this historic landmark, to maintaining its historical significance and charm.
