More about Kapunahala Elementary

Kapunahala Elementary serves families in Keapuka, Kapunahala, Hokulele, Castle Hills and Ko`olau Village. Our school’s staff, families and members of the community work in partnership toward growth in all curricular areas with an emphasis on literacy and a deep understanding in math to prepare our learners to become college or career ready upon graduation from Castle High.

The school is committed to programs that support the development of the “whole child.” Kapunahala offers a variety of activities that enhance learning throughout the school day. These activities include swimming, bike education, Science Fair, Castle Speech Festival and the Castle Performing Arts Program.

Kapunahala holds Winter and May Day Programs, where students show off their talents. Our student council is very active and hosts many events to support student wellness. These activities include Turkey Trot, Dolphin Fun Run, a Valentine’s Day activity, Red Ribbon Month to support drug awareness and resistance, a Halloween costume contest, bullying prevention activities and a School Spirit Week. This year Kapunahala hosted after-school enrichment programs to extend learning beyond the school day. These programs included robotics, STEM, journalism, Hawaiian language, JPO Club, Math Club and Garden Club. Also, new this year was the implementation of the Second Step Guidance program to standardize health education and promote healthy lifestyles.

Also after school, Kapunahala offered fitness programs to prepare students to compete in the King Cross Country Meet, Windward District Physical Education Festival, Kaneohe Track Meet and the 6th-grade volleyball and basketball tournaments.

Kapunahala hosts a variety of events to support smooth transitions for students. There is a kindergarten and Early Learning Meet-and-Greet Night and an orientation for incoming kindergarten parents, a Meet-and-Greet Night for all students and a Sneak-a-Peek day to transition all students to the next grade level prior to the end of the school year.

The student council holds a transition luncheon for all new students in grades four through six to support the building of new relationships with their peers. The 6th-graders also participate in a session with King Intermediate students and staff to prepare them for 7th grade. During the school year, Kapunahala participates in district-coordinated activities to encourage early learning by providing activities for students to participate at Windward Mall.

Kapunahala believes that parent engagement is one of the keys to student success; therefore, we hold quarterly Parent-Child Activity Nights. Our Kapunahala Ohana also encourages family engagement by inviting our community to participate in Movie Nights, Breakfast with Santa, Make a Difference Day and the Kapunahala Fun Fair.
