William Stephen Keel (Steve) went to be with his heavenly father on October 9, 2012 after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis and subsequent lung transplants at Duke Hospital. The support of friends has been incredible during this journey. We thank each of you for your prayers and support. They have sustained the family, in particular Mom (Nancy Keel) who also cares for a mentally disabled daughter (Charissa) and aging mother (Grandma, who at the time of Steve's death was 97.) The story of Steve's impact is yet to be finished, as his work in spreading the word of God around the world continues though others who caught his vision.

Steve Keel is on a long journey to recovery. Five years ago, he was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Basically, for no known reason, his lungs began to slowly die. In October of 2011, he entered the final stage of IPF and was in need of an emergency lung transplant or he would die. On New Year’s Eve 2011, Steve received a new left lung. The first week after the surgery, he showed miraculous signs of recovery, but then the lung unexpectedly stopped expanding and was not producing enough oxygen to sustain his life. Within a few weeks, the doctors at Duke Hospital decided that he must have another lung transplant – this time the right lung – or he would not live. Without time to fully recover from the first surgery, Steve was given a second lung and a second chance at life. The subsequent weeks and months since this second transplant Steve has experienced severe muscle atrophy, PTSD, ICI psychosis, and general anxiety, as well as a multitude of medical procedures and the slow physical burden of recovery. He has been inside Duke Hospital continuously since his first surgery on December 31, 2011. We, Steve’s family, ask you to take a few minutes from your day and send Steve a few words of encouragement to remind him of the world outside of the hospital and of hope for his life ahead.
