According to the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, an affiliate of the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, 109,000 DC residents — or almost one in five — live below poverty. Children are much more likely to live below the poverty level than adults — 27 percent vs. 17 percent.

And while DC winters may seem mild to those originally from the northeast or midwest — approximately 70% of winter season days typically triggered hypothermia alerts.

That's a lot of people, especially kids, who need warm hats, mittens and scarves during the winter.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

First and foremost, if you meet someone who needs help, call 1-800-SHELTER or 911.

But Knit DC wants to do more. Knit hats, mittens, and scarves with us, even if you've never knitted before. We'll teach you how to knit, and give you the supplies to do it.

We'll pool our projects and donate them to local shelters periodically throughout the winter, but the first donation will be made on Nov. 1, 2016, the start of Hypothermia Season.
