More about La Porte Parks & Recreation Department

Over the past 21 years, the City of La Porte has spent close to $18 million on its parks & recreation facilities. The Parks and Recreation Department goal is: to provide and manage superior parks and recreational facilities, innovative programs, and services that will provide our customers with pleasure and enrichment. City Council has long been an advocate for recreation and La Porte has an enviable array of recreation facilities for a city its size. While we suffered setbacks due to Hurricane Ike, we are moving forward with a replacement pier at Sylvan Beach Park and other park upgrades to bring the system back up to quality standards.

At the first of the year, the City, State, and County jointly completed a new shoreline protection and beach project at Sylvan Beach that has already become immensely popular. The City of La Porte operates a 350,000 gallon Wave Pool, a membership driven Recreation & Fitness Center, two bayside parks, two fishing piers, a rodeo/open riding arena, and three neighborhood swimming pools, and soon to open, a playground/ “sprayground” replacing the swimming pool at Brookglen Park; all for the benefit of the citizens of La Porte. We have added three new facilities to the park system this year: Pecan Park & Sports Complex with its 10 youth baseball fields and pavilion; Wood Falls Park, both on the City’s west side; and the Five Points Park in the Main Street District.

The City has a total of 22 parks and recreation facilities, with baseball, softball, soccer, football, bicycle/pedestrian/exercise/nature trails, a senior center, a Special Populations Center, and other amenities for the enjoyment of our citizens and visitors. Lastly, the City is adding approximately 8 miles of trails to our Bicycle/Pedestrian Trail System, with a 5.2 mile trail connecting Little Cedar Bayou Park to the Pasadena Convention Center, and all points in between. There will be new trails northward from Fairmont to Spencer; at both Bay Area Boulevard, and at Canada Road. The new trail from Five Points to Sylvan Beach Park will soon be under construction as well. The Parks and Recreation Department also operates three recreation centers and two other rental facilities used for community functions by residents and other local groups.

We will continue to make quality the guiding light for our activities, so that our community will continue to have the very best parks and recreation opportunities in the area, and the best quality of life. Come see what we've done and are doing to meet this goal.
