The John Durang Puppet Museum
John Durang was the first American-born professional actor. He was born on Jan 6, 1768 in Lancaster, Pa. and actually lived on Water Street, the same street as Hole in the Wall Puppet Theatre. He left this world in 1816.
In honor of this early American performer and son of Lancaster, we created this museum in his memory. The John Durang Museum features puppets from around the world including including hand, shadow, rod, and marionettes. You can view puppets from past and current Hole in the Wall productions. You can also learn about John Durang and his influence on stage performance and live entertainment in the United States.
