More about Last Chance Mining Museum

The Last Chance Mining museum, open twice daily from mid-May through late September, is perched on the flanks of Mt. Roberts in the verdant Last Chance Basin, a one mile walk or short taxi ride from downtown Juneau, Alaska's capital. From the parking area, the site is reached by walking over a bridge across Gold Creek and up a short hill. The museum is in an original turn-of-the-century building (which has no heat, so dress warmly). The site houses what had been, in 1914, the world's largest air compressor, used to power tools in the more than 100 miles of tunnels inside Mt. Roberts. That and other cutting edge technology made Juneau the most productive low-grade gold mining area in the world: more than 7 million ounces were produced -- and about half that much silver. Original equipment, documents, and photos bring alive the earliest years of an industry that shaped the history of the town that is today Alaska's bustling and beautiful capital. Visitors are reminded that this small, volunteer-operated venue accepts CASH only; admission is $5 per person; IS CLOSED from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm each day and from late September until mid-May. It's a unique site for weddings and other special occasions -- so call the caretakers at the number listed.
