Les Indiennes

Mary Bergtold Mulcahy launched Les Indiennes in 2002. She had a vivid picture in mind of naturally dyed cotton, with airy patterns of big, single colored motifs. Unable to locate anything anywhere she decided to go to the source and create her own.

In a tiny village in southern India Mary found a craftsman named Srinivas Pitchuka. He is one of the only artisans who still practices the ancient art of Kalamkari. This is an extremely complex printing process in which organic cotton is bleached in the sun, washed in the river and hand block-printed with natural dyes.

Each bolt of fabric of Les Indiennes fabric is one of a kind. World-famous designers and discerning customers understand that the hand-made elements of these textiles, including the variations and small imperfections, are what set it apart from factory-produced fabrics.

Mary won the International Design Award for Interiors in 2008 and the 2006 Best Fabric Collection from UK Homes & Gardens. Les Indiennes fabrics have been featured in World of Interiors, Elle Décor, Architectural Digest, Martha Stewart Living, Veranda and many other publications.
