THE B&B STORY
In 1981 the Coat Guard fully automated the light station eliminating the need for a keeper in residence. The Lake County Historical Society was allowed to lease the property and provide tours. The site was kept open but it continued to need a great deal of maintenance and repair. The government just didn't have the funding so in 1999, through an act of Congress, the Light Station was sold to the Lake County Historical Society. The Society opened the Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast as a means to generate funds to maintain the facility. As part of the educational experience our guests are"Light Keepers" in training and are required to monitor weather, ship traffic and raise and lower the flag. The light station remains a privately owned navigational aid and is Minnesota's oldest continuously operating light house.
The Lake County Historical Society is a privately owned 501.c.3 Non-Profit Organization dependent upon the generosity of our members and patrons.
