More about Lincoln Community Center

The Lincoln Community Centers roots run back to 1865. From 1865 until 1924 the one room school house was the school for blacks in the Troy community. The Lincoln Association was established in 1924. It later became known as the Lincoln community Association. The spirit of the association is probably best summed up by the preamble to its constitution. The center was to:
“Promote the welfare of the Negroes of Troy and the vicinity, allow the use of its grounds and hall for social and festive purposes, establish recreational facilities for the children of Troy, and disperse charity to the aged and needy, so far as funds will permit.”
Once, the new building was added to the little “Negro School” the Lincoln community Center developed a philosophy of being open to everyone, with a clientele, as ranging from ages 8 to 80. This was a place African Americans could come to as they were not allowed to swim in public pools or go to any public schools.
In 1959, the newly formed United Fund began contributing to the center. The first United Fund contribution amounted to $8,500. Previous to 1959, the center received money from the Troy Community chest. Over these past 70 years the Lincoln Community Center has been servicing the community and the city of Troy, Ohio and surrounding areas providing a variety of services.
The Lincoln Community center has an organized playground, swimming pool, gym, stage, kitchen, weight room, and enrichment center that was used as a preschool. We also have a room that if we get some instruments will make a great room for music lessons. We currently have renovations going on and many programs to offer for all ages. Come in and check us out.
