More about Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District

The Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District, Inc. (LPCCD) is a non-profit organization actively engaged in the practice of creative place-making. Our mission to plan, design and develop a vibrant and comprehensive cultural/arts district in the Lincoln Park. The four core areas of our community building plan includes: (a) Real Estate and Historic Preservation (b) Sustainable Living/Health & Wellness (c) Community Advocacy & Engagement and (d) Arts & Culture. LPCCD’s two main arts & culture programs are the annual Lincoln Park Music Festival and Lincoln Park Music Speaks.

According to the New Jersey Historical Society’s research specialist, in 1861 President Abraham Lincoln delivered an address on his way to his inauguration from the Old South Park Presbyterian Church, which was adjacent to South Park. Lincoln Park is a historic neighborhood and according to NewarkHistory.com, “at the turn of the last century, Lincoln Park was the home of some of Newark's business and cultural elite. Leather manufacturers John Peshine and Isaac Bannister and jewelry maker David Dodd called Lincoln Park home after the Civil War. Soon they were joined by the even wealthier German brewers Christian Feigenspan and Gottfried Krueger. When Feigenspan moved to a larger mansion on High Street, his home was purchased by Henry Kessler, after whom the Kessler Institute is named. Even Governor Franklin Murphy, owner of the Murphy Varnish Company, lived here.” The nickname "Coast" was given to the Lincoln Park area in the 1920s and 30s because of the strip of black businesses, jazz clubs and booming nightlife. At this time, Lincoln Park was the center of African American life in Newark, NJ.

We are the keepers of the flame, the history, and the legacy.
