Literacy Volunteers of Southwest Minnesota

Literacy Volunteers of Southwest Minnesota (LV*SW*MN) is a community-based nonprofit organization founded in 2011 to match trained volunteer tutors and adult learners with specific literacy needs and to offer library-based family literacy programming. In January 2015, we began offering family literacy programs with Marshall ECFE for recent immigrant and refugee families. We also added an after-school STEM literacy program at Marshall Middle School. Tutoring is provided to learners at no cost.

We are located in Marshall, Minnesota but provide services throughout Lyon, Lincoln, and Redwood Counties. We partner with the Southwest Adult Basic Education (ABE) Consortium.

The purposes of LV*SW*MN are:
- to connect volunteer tutors with adult learners in our region who want to increase their literacy skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, basic math, and technology;
- to provide professional training and continuing education for volunteer tutors in adult learning, ESL and basic literacy;
- to partner with other organizations to ensure that the comprehensive literacy needs of people within our region are being met; and
- to promote the idea that literacy changes individual lives and communities for the better.
