Little Bow Wow Rescue

Little Bow Wow Rescue is not a new organization, but we do have a new mission.

In 2002 Vicki Stone founded Little Bow Wow Rescue and started saving dogs from being euthanized in high kill shelters in Southern California. Since then our organization has saved over 1000 lives.

In 2003 a veterinary technician named Michele contacted Vicki about volunteering as a foster. Her experience as a vet-tech combined with Vicki’s experience in rescue made them a match made in heaven! Soon a strong partnership was formed that developed into a great friendship as well.

Before long Little Bow Wow was known among the So. California animal shelters for being willing to take in sick, debilitated and special needs dogs, rehabilitating them and finding them adoptive homes. Of course LBW also fostered young, healthy dogs and found homes for them as well.

In 2004 Vicki moved to Northern Ca. and in 2007 Michele moved back to the Midwest.

Over the next few years both Vicki and Michele went through some major life changes and mutually decided to downsize their rescue efforts. Little Bow Wow maintained its non-profit status but the number of dogs rescued and adopted were not as high as the early years of the organization.

As LBW continued functioning as a smaller organization it seemed that most of the dogs we were being asked to take in were primarily special needs and senior dogs at high risk of euthanasia in shelters.

We were also often contacted by other rescue groups asking if we would accept senior and special needs dogs from their organizations.

This change has felt like a new beginning for Little Bow Wow so we now function primarily as a sanctuary.

We specialize in providing long term and palliative care for senior and special needs small breed dogs. Our “forever foster” dogs live with us in our homes and are considered members of our families.

We currently have 22 senior and special needs dogs fostered in private homes from California to the Midwest.

We have limited space because in addition to caring for the dogs in private homes, in most cases we do not place these dogs up for adoption. Most of them have already been through enough in their lives and our goal is to make their golden years as comfortable and happy as possible.
