More about Los Angeles Valley College Ceramics Program

Ceramics
The Ceramics program (Introduction to Ceramics, Art 708, Ceramics I, Art 709, Ceramics II, Art 710 and
Ceramics III, Art 711) at LAVC remains a significant component of the 3-D Studio program.

The ceramics department is headed by full-time instructor Katie Queen.

All levels from beginning to advanced courses are combined. The Los Angeles Valley College Art Department groups courses together to provide multiple levels of instruction and to maintain high enrollments. The Ceramics
sequence offers Art 708, Introduction to Ceramics, Art 709, Ceramics I, Art 710, Ceramics II and Art 711, Ceramics III. This configuration provides a sequence of levels for students, moving from basic skills to advanced skill levels. Typically more students are enrolled in the beginning levels. Without combining the
classes we could not offer as comprehensive a program in this discipline. Art 185, 285, 385, Directed Study - Art Honors are courses available to students who develop a highly advanced project in conjunction with the instructor.

With only one instructor who must also load and fire the kilns, the ceramics department also enrolls the help of lab technicians.
This allows us to keep the facility supervised and open for longer hours and also meet
increasing student demands. While Ceramic courses stand on their own as a traditional component in the Arts, today ceramic media is utilized in sculpture and design areas, so that adding more classes would give sculpture students the ability to use clay media for their work.
