More about Mac's

In 1911, Mac was born in VanLear, Kentucky and moved to Flint, MI at the age of 7. By the age of 25 (between the years of 1936-1950) Mac began his own business of owning and operating Star Food Grocery Stores and Food Town Grocery. This was impressive at such a young age considering Mac’s necessitous background. Mac was also the youngest man in town to own a car.

Mac married his wife LaVerne McClellan in 1933. LaVerne and her sister Mildred began performing on the vaudeville circuit, dancing on stage in Detroit, Chicago, New York, and many stops along the way. They became known as “The Haymond Sisters” as an act in the Ziegfeld Follies for about six years. The Ziegfeld Follies were a series of elaborate theatrical productions on Broadway in New York City from 1907 through 1931. One of girls’ special routines included performing synchronized dance steps while their ankles were connected by 8” chains.

Mac and LaVerne moved to Saginaw in 1936 and raised their children.

By 1950, Mac started Mac Distributing Company, a window and door outlet for builders and homeowners. Mac’s son Jim still operates this business today under the name of “Mac’s Windows and Doors”. In 1960, Mac started Thermaglas Corporation, the first insulated glass manufacturer in northern Michigan.

Though Mac passed in February of 2005, his legacy still lives on through his children.

Mac’s Bar + Kitchen is a family owned business of acknowledgment, gratitude, and respect to to Ervin “Mac” McClellan.

It has been long said that if the 1930s were a book, it would begin with the Great Depression and end with the influx of the second World War. It was the fourth decade in the twentieth century history of the United States, the country’s darkest hour, and quite possibly one of the most socially ambient decades of all.
Despite the toll that the Great Depression took on the United States, there was still a spirit of the times that fused the tension of the era with the social realism and art deco style that gained popularity throughout the world.

Here is your opportunity to step back into time. Not only is Mac's a restored 1930’s Art Deco Style Bar, the bar itself came from Chicago and happened to be in one of Al Capone’s Speakeasys. Gold accent’s, antique restored chandeliers, art deco/nouveau décor, character, and other countless touches adorn Mac’s.

Joel and Jason Curran (grandchildren of Mac) create the bar environment full of fun, flair, and amazing craft cocktails. Not only does Mac’s feature an impressive selection of bourbons and whisky, but also a staggering selection of beer and wine. Mac's holds the largest selection of bitters and bourbons in the tri-cities and quite possibly all of Michigan. Creating craft cocktails is far more complicated than using fresh-squeezed lime juice in place of mixes. Every ingredient in the drink and element of its presentation -- down to the glassware -- can be fresh, homemade and prepared specifically for the individual drink recipe.
