More about Mahoning County Dog Warden

About
The Mahoning County Dog Wardens office enforces Ohio dog laws in Mahoning County and operates the Mahoning County Dog Warden's office & Adoption Center

Mission
Our mission is to provide compassionate care to the dogs at the pound, as well as promoting adoption of appropriate animals and providing education and safety services to the residents of Mahoning County, so that they can live in a community free of animal-health related and safety concerns.

General Information
Last year we took in nearly 1,300 dogs and puppies, including all stray dogs in the county as well as owner surrenders and unwanted litters of puppies.

What we do...

We rescue dogs who have been lost, discarded, or abandoned. Residents searching for a lost dog should visit the pound immediately to file a lost dog report and look for their dog as you are the only one who knows your dog.

Each year we reunite hundreds of lost dogs with their owners. For those who are not claimed, we cooperate with all reputable rescue groups and service organizations to place our dogs.

We sell dog licenses, which are required by law if you own a dog. Making sure your dog's license is displayed on his collar can help us get him safely home to you sooner. Dog licenses must be purchased annually by February 28th at a cost $20 per dog. Fees increase to $40 after the deadline

We find responsible, loving new homes for hundreds of unwanted dogs each year. On average the Adoption Center has up to 60 dogs and puppies available for adoption daily. We do everything we can to see that healthy, adoptable dogs have an opportunity to be adopted. Visit us and you will find dogs of all ages, shapes, sizes and breed

We provide compassionate care and veterinary services for all dogs at the shelter. All dogs adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered and reieve a rabies vaccine prior to adoption as part of the shelter’s effort to reduce the number of unwanted dogs and puppies in Mahoning County. All dogs are also vaccinated for distemper parvo corona and tested for heartworms prior to adoption.

Adoption fees are as follows :

Dogs are $135 (spay/neuter adoption and license)

We currently have entered into a spay/neuter program where adopters can choose from 1 of 3 participating veterinarians.
1) Angels for Animals
2) Animal Charity of Youngstown
3) Steel Valley Spay/Neuter Clinic

We rehabilitate many sick, injured or tramatized dogs each year by providing medical care and a loving foster home until the dog is ready for adoption, giving them a second chance for a life they deserve. Many of our special needs dogs are alive and well due to the efforts of Friends of Dido, a non-profit volunteer organization.

In December of 2011 Friends of Fido, a non-profit 501c3 was formed to coordinate fundraising activities for programs that directly benefit the dogs at the pound. FOF provides money for additional medical care in special cases, as well as providing socilaizaton and enrichment of our dogs.

Mahoning County Dog Pound has educational programs designed to assist dog owners. We educate adults and children in the community about safety around dogs and responsible dog ownership, as well as volunteer opportunities at the shelter.

The Mahoning County Dog Wardens Office is committed to encouraging adoption as an alternative to purchasing a dog or puppy from a pet store. We work with dozens of Rescues to help our Mahoning County dogs get the HAPPILY EVER AFTERS THEY deserve

And we frequently assist humane agents at the Animal Charity of Youngstown ,the only agency for animal cruelty, abuse and neglect cases in Mahoning County.
