Mainers for Accountable Elections

Mainers for Accountable Elections is a grassroots citizens coalition made up of Democrats, Republicans, Greens and Independents who are urging Mainers to vote Yes on Question 1 this November. Question 1 was placed on the ballot by more than 80,000 Mainers who are committed to keeping control of elections in the hands of the people.

Question 1 will:

- Increase fines and penalties for those who break election rules so we can keep our representatives accountable to us.

- Increase transparency and shine a light on dark money in our elections by requiring outside groups to list their top three funders on any ads they buy.

- Ensure that everyone -- not just the wealthy -- can be represented in our democracy by reforming Maine’s campaign finance system so candidates in Maine can run for office without having to depend on outside sources. When politicians depend on contributions from large corporations, lobbyists, and special interest groups -- they work for them. We deserve politicians who work for us.

We believe in government of, by and for the people -- not government bought and paid for by the wealthiest individuals and special interests. Mainers deserve politicians who are accountable to us. By strengthening campaign finance limits, increasing transparency through stronger disclosure requirements, limiting dark money’s influence on elected officials, and increasing fines and penalties for those who break the rules, we can keep our representatives honest and keep control of elections in the hands of voters.
