More about Marblehead Fire Department

The Marblehead Fire Department was officially established by an Act of the Massachusetts Legislature in 1829. The first fire engine, however, was presented to the Town in 1751 by resident Robert "King" Hooper. The Department is a 42 person Civil Service Department. The members work 24 hour shifts divided into 4 groups.

There are two fire stations: the Central Station and the Franklin Street Station. The department is equipped with:

One ladder
Two engines
One reserve ladder
One Fire Boat
The "Jaws of Life" tool, a hydraulic rescue device, available for automobile accidents and other uses
Each truck carries a cardiac defibrillator, and all fire fighters and officers are trained and certified in its use.

The Marblehead Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with several surrounding communities in the event additional assistance is required.

The Marblehead Fire Department is devoted to maintaining a high level of professionalism. This is achieved through in-service training. All shifts train a minimum of one hour each day and all members are encouraged to attend courses offered by the Massachusetts Fire Academy at no cost.
