Thomas Yagle was the first U.S. serviceman from the Grand Traverse Region of Michigan to be killed in Vietnam. He was a Mortar man with the 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d Marine Division, FMF. He was killed in action on 16 April 1966, from multiple fragmentation wounds in Quang Nam Province of the Republic of South Vietnam. He is listed on "The Wall" in Washington, DC, Panel 06E-Row 119. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City, Michigan. A Marine Corps flag flies over his grave.
Roger Yagle enlisted in 1967 and was wounded three times, but survived Vietnam only to die stateside in an accident near Camp Lejeune, NC.
The Yagle Brothers Detachment #165 of the Marine Corps League, Traverse City, MI 49684, is named in honor, of the Yagle Brothers, Thomas and Roger. Their names live on through Yagle Brothers Detachment.
