Herald-Advocate

The Herald-Advocate’s predecessor, The Farmers Friend, was first
published here in 1874.

In 1879 it became The Marlboro Planter, which later became The
Marlboro Democrat. In 1885 The Pee Dee Advocate was established
and in 1908 The Marlboro Democrat was combined with it.

In 1931, the late Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Kinney began the Marlboro
County Herald, which continued until they purchased The Pee Dee
Advocate from W. G. Hazel in 1951 and combined it with the
Herald to form the Marlboro Herald-Advocate. In 1972, Wm. L.
Kinney, Jr., editor-publisher, purchased his parents’ interest.
