Material Grace

The Material Grace label began in 2003 with artist and designer Bonnie Wells. The name, which refers to her line of personal accessories and other unique textiles and handmade accessories for the home, now graces 11 Throckmorton Avenue in Mill Valley, California. The store, which features Wells' own line, also offers personal and home accessories from a special group of designer/makers in the U.S. and abroad, with whom Wells has established personal relationships during her extensive travels to Europe and Scandinavia.

At Material Grace you will find a beautiful selection of artful ceramics, vintage and contemporary Swedish rugs, 100% linen kitchen and bath towels, Danish designed baby alpaca throws, 100% Merino wool blankets from Ireland and hand stitched quilts made with block printed fabrics from India, just to name a few. She even has cuckoo clocks which chime with the ring of different bird call every hour on the hour. You can also take advantage of her custom fabrication services from the current inventory of contemporary textiles from Sweden, Denmark, Japan and the U.K.

Inside the golden yellow front door Swedish bath towels and screen printed pillows, cashmere throws from England, and French linens line the walls of the bright sunny shop. Unique soaps and artisan candlesticks overflow baskets upon tables laden with 100% linen pot holders, felted tea cosies, guest towels and hand screen printed aprons. A chandelier hangs over the second room in the shop and gorgeous white semi-sheer curtains, custom made from fabrics sold by Material Grace, hang in the windows. Bonnie Wells' scarves, designer wraps, handbags and in the middle... a farm table piled high with colorful silk and woolen textiles.

Step down the stairs into a light filled room to find a 1920s creamy vintage stove which contrasts to the color Austrian artisan candles, red checkered vintage linens, and a french lamp wrapped in colorful textiles. The white checkerboard floor, graced with a few orange tiles will surely put a smile on your face as you peruse the many table top accessories displayed on the old wooden farm table. The over-sized vintage linen pillowcases from France, and danish towels patterned with bird silhouettes are just a few of the many treasures here. Hand woven lavender sachets in the shapes of owls, frogs and bunnies... french made sewing needles, and 100% linen thread along with the latest edition of Selvedge Magazine, are just a few of the items that will warm the hearts of any textile enthusiast.

The textiles and unique home accessories featured at Material Grace put a spot light on designer/makers who bridge the gap between craft and design in fresh, creative ways, deepening the connection we all have to the everyday objects of our lives.
