I’ve been a devoted student of the fascinating school of image capture (both still and moving images) for over 20 years.

My first hands-on experience occurred in college, when I enrolled in a photography course and learned all about capturing light on film. My tools at the time were a Pentax K-1000 and rolls upon rolls of hand-processed Kodak Tri-X black-and-white film.

The “red light” experience of getting your hands wet in the darkroom served me well in my first job after graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill. I was the sports editor at The Journal-Patriot in North Wilkesboro, NC, for three years, and twice I was recognized by the NC Press Association for excellence in sports photography.

After my stint at the newspaper, I set up my own darkroom in the basement of my home. I “graduated” from 35mm photography to medium format, which offered a substantially larger 6x6cm negative size, and accordingly sharper enlargements. Convinced I was the next Ansel Adams (and what B&W photographer doesn’t share that dream!), I soon started dabbling in large format photography, building my own 8×10 camera and acquiring a vintage 4×5. At one point, I even worked up enough courage to try building a mammoth 16×20 ultra-large format camera. (It was only a partial success–giant negatives were produced, but several unfixable light leaks led to the discontinuation of using the camera.)

Eventually, my interest in image capture evolved into the realm of videography once I started shooting my children (as most parents dutifully do) on a JVC VHS-C camcorder. Soon tapes gave way to hard drives, and with it grainy, fuzzy footage gave rise to crisp, high definition video.

My latest video camera is the Canon 6D, a full frame DSLR that allows me greater creative control than a prosumer camcorder. When I'm able to run a 2nd camera, it's a Canon 60D handled admirably by my wife Carmen.

I edit my footage on a state-of-the-art Dell XPS rig running Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12. All that amazing technology adds up to a complete video and audio production studio in the comforts of my home.

By merging the ultimate picture with the ultimate sound, McFlySoHigh Video is committed to the ideal that QUALITY matters most when it comes to capturing and archiving disc golf. If QUALITY matters, you can trust me and my company.

You have my word on that,

Marty H. McGee (McFly)
