Meals on Wheels of Ridgefield, Connecticut was founded in 1972 when a a need was identified to care for people in our community who were unable to prepare their own meals due to illness, injury, age and other disabilities. With a $500 grant from the Association of Ridgefield clergy, three local women started cooking in the basement of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, delivering 24 meals/week. Today, we prepare and deliver almost 20,000 meals each year. Lunch and dinner is available up to 7 days/week. Our meals are freshly prepared with plenty of healthy ingredients. We have 5 part-time employees, a Registered Dietitian and over 120 volunteers who ensure our wheels keep turning. Clients are charged a nominal fee for meals that covers 30% of our costs. We raise the balance of operating expenses from donations, fundraising and grants, receiving no federal or state aid.
