More about Medical Laboratory Technology

This is an associate of applied science degree program in medical laboratory technology. Completion of the program provides you with eligibility to take the medical laboratory technician certification test through American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

If working in the healthcare field is appealing to you but the thought of extensive patient care does not; becoming a lab tech may be your calling. Lab techs still get the perks of working in healthcare: great job outlook and security, amazing benefits, good pay, and the satisfaction of knowing you’re saving lives; all while working behind the scenes with minimal patient contact.

There are two teachers, Ms. Breci and Ms. Livingston, which teach the entire program. They have many years of experience in both teaching and in the clinical laboratory. They are filled with wisdom and guidance that will give you the confidence to succeed, no matter where you decide to work. The graduating class is precisely a dozen students. These people will become your second family! And the small classes permit for a more intimate and thriving learning environment.

If money is an issue for you then you will be happy to know that Midlands Technical College is a lot less expensive than the local universities. Financial aid, loans, and countless scholarships are available for those who qualify. Also, after completing your first clinical rotation in the program, you are eligible to become a certified phlebotomist and may work as a phlebotomist while you are still in school!

Another great advantage about this program is there is no waiting list! As long as you have met all the requirements, taken all the prerequisite courses, and have applied in time to secure your spot – then you can start this Fall.

There are so many opportunities awaiting the MLT graduates from this program. You could work in a research lab, a reference lab, a hospital, a doctor’s office, or for the Red Cross. There is also a lot of room for advancement. You can work your way up to becoming a medical laboratory scientist, a lab director, a MLT teacher, a pathologist, or even an engineer to work on the medical equipment the techs use. You can specialize in a department of your choosing whether you prefer hematology, blood bank, chemistry, microbiology, or any combination of the above
