It is ironic that in 1927 the predominately white First Presbyterian Church congregation fled to the Woodlawn community to escape the black southern migration activity feeling safe and protected by the University of Chicago Campus. 75 years later, in 2004, a relatively small community church of Woodlawn known as the Christ Apostolic Church, under the leadership of a dynamic Pastor and advocate for social justice, made it possible to save the Bronzeville gem from demolition. To that end, we celebrate the enormous contribution both churches made to the history and culture of black Chicago history as we, the Metropolitan Apostolic Community Church, with the help of the Lord, continue on our mission to lift the consciousness of God’s people.
