More about MHS Contractors

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a natural occurrent mineral, and was used over the year for its fire and heat resistance, it was broadly used in construction materials for this reason, among others like insulating properties, tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to chemicals.

Once considered a "miracle mineral" asbestos was used for many years in building construction. It can be found in many forms and places. Asbestos was used in acoustic ceiling, heater ducting, insulation, floor tiles, sheet flooring, flooring mastic, exhaust flues, exterior siding, roofing materials, roof mastic and plaster walls and other building materials.

Because of its “indestructible” qualities, asbestos is harmful to the human body. The body cannot digest, break down, or change asbestos; it can only attempt to encapsulate it with scar tissue.
Several types of asbestos were banned by the EPA in the mid-70's due to concern over the health effects (especially cancer) associated with exposure to such materials. The diseases caused by Asbestos include: Asbestosis, Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer.

When planning demolition, renovation or remodeling projects, owners and contractors must be concerned with risking exposure to asbestos dust.

Can I Remove Asbestos Myself?

EPA recommends that when dealing with materials containing asbestos, whether it is to repair or remove, you hire an asbestos professional to do the work for you. Improper handling of asbestos material can create more of a hazard than if it is left undisturbed.
