John Keats's 1816 poem "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer" describes the intense emotion, broadening of perspective, and sense of personal transformation that can accompany the study of literature. To Keats, reading is like "travel[ing] in the realms of gold / and seeing many goodly states and kingdoms" (lines 1-2), and our role as readers can be compared to that of "some watcher of the skies / when a new planet swims into his ken" (lines 9-10).
The Middle Georgia State College Department of English invites you to be our traveling companions, to discover new planets of ideas, to traverse that foreign land of the imagination. Literary study can and does open up new worlds for those who embrace it with open minds and hearts, and we feel privileged to be your guides on this exciting journey.
