Midnight Forest Farm

About us:

My husband, Kirk, and I have dreamed of owning a farm for quite some time. My name is Dorothy. I grew up in Loudoun County, VA. I lived in a rural location most of my life. When I was in 6th grade, I brought home some discarded male chicks from the 4H fair. I carried them home in my baseball cap, across the street to the farm where my mother and I lived. I fell in love with those birds and I fell in love with participating in 4H. Fast forward to adulthood.... I convinced my husband we needed chickens after we settled into our own home. He reluctantly gave in. He fell in love with them, too. I can tell you, he loves them more than our dog. We have been keeping chickens as a family for 8 years. Our children now participate in 4H and love their chickens.

About the farm-to-be:

We say farm to be because we are looking for financing, angel investors, and we're also selling outdoor and chicken themed products on our Etsy store to help us get this venture off the ground. Our farm will specialize in endangered breeds of poultry as identified by the Livestock Conservancy (which we are members of). We are starting with Faverolles, Chantelcers, Blue Andalusians, and Campines. We are currently looking for land in Loudoun County that will suit our needs. Ideally, we would like 10+ acres that is already in agricultural use.

About the name:

Midnight Forest Farm is rooted in a tradition of conservation. The name is a nod to the Midnight Forests that Teddy Roosevelt created towards the end of his presidency.
