Midwives on Missions of Service

In Sierra Leone, MOMS crafts a partnership among leaders and people in the villages that invite us to work. Within this partnership, we teach birth attendants how to provide evidence-based care to women and to organize their communities for change. With micro-grants, the birth attendants start small businesses to feed themselves and help needy women.

Our birth attendants connect village women to the healthcare system. They teach the women and girls about nutrition, sanitation, family planning, and breastfeeding.

MOMS' Sierra Leonean staff visits the women monthly, to encourage them, answer questions, and assess needs. MOMS' teaching teams visit twice a year to train new groups and conduct continuing education sessions.

MOMS' western staff is not paid. All teachers are volunteers who pay their own way to and from Africa. MOMS does pay our Sierra Leonean staff.
