More about Milford Volunteer Fire Department

The Milford Volunteer Fire Department is a social organization made up of two of the 6 original fire companies that served the City of Milford, Ct until the mid 1980's, when the current paid department was formed and put into service.
Today the department's mission is the preservation of hundreds of years of the history of the fire service within the city and providing community service.
It's headquarters is a small museum located at 71 Wheelers Farm Rd which houses many artifacts, photos and apparatus.
The department maintains Milford's first operational fire pumper, which is a 1883 handpumper manufactured by the Button Fire Engine Company out of New York. Contrary to popular belief, this apparatus was never horse drawn, it was hand pulled throughout the city when the volunteers were called upon.
The department also has a a 1897 Leverwich parade wagon which was strictly a ceremonial piece, complete with gas lamps which was used for parades and ceremonies.
Along with those two, the departmenr acquired a 1959 Mack B85 thermodyne engine and a 1975 Ford Pierce mini pumper both of which are operational and used during competition.
Every year on the second sunday in June the department holds a memorial service on the town green, rain or shine. This is where all of the fallen members, both in the line of duty, and of natural causes, of the department are honored. All 6 of the original companies participate in the service.
If you would like any more information, please feel free to email the department at the email address listed.
