More about Mills Seed Co. Building

Mills Seed Co. Building is 40' by 100' and three stories tall with a full basement. It was moved in February 2010. After the move Patterson House Moving failed to provide adequate supports under two of the nine interior columns on the east end. During the past four years the columns have sagged allowing the roof to drop and water has been entering the building. Currently the columns have been re-enforced to stabilize the building and the floors and columns will be brought back to their proper level in the coming months. The columns and beams will be replaced and the floor joists will be strengthened as well. The remainder of the building is in excellent shape. All of the 92 windows will be rehabilitated as well as the brick exterior will be re-pointed.

We are entertaining ideas for the use of the building and currently have many people interested in creating an Center for the Arts.

The building's history is very interesting. It started as an economic development project for the community to bring a seed distribution center here from New York. The mail that created required that a new post office be built. For a period of time, the
Washington Pearl Button factory utilized the building to "card" buttons (many buttons are still in the building). The Curran Company also operated in the building printing various items including "Talley Cards" for bridge and valentines. The last use was by TRI D sign company. We are interested in documenting all of the history of the building and welcome comments.
