Missouri Secretary of State

The Secretary of State’s office protects the state’s tradition of democracy and free market enterprise by providing vital services to the people and businesses of Missouri. These services are administered through the office’s major divisions – Elections, Business Services, Record Services, State Library and Securities – at the Kirkpatrick State Information Center in Jefferson City, as well as field offices across the state.

As the state’s chief elections officer, the Secretary of State ensures that every eligible Missourian has the opportunity to vote and participate in Missouri’s democratic form of government. While protecting this right for citizens throughout the state, the Secretary of State also facilitates all statewide elections and upholds the integrity of the electoral system.

Additionally, the Secretary of State provides the platform for companies and entrepreneurs to do business in Missouri through the office’s Business Services division. While welcoming business owners to the marketplace, the Secretary of State also protects investors from fraud through the Securities division. The maxim that sustains this work is that all Missourians deserve a fair marketplace where they have the opportunity to prosper with hard work and smart choices.

Democracies also depend on knowledge of history and current affairs, because without it democracies would languish. In this vein, the Secretary of State maintains the State Archives, housed in the Record Services division, and the State Library as repositories of information that shed light on the issues confronting government today as well as the heritage that shapes the state’s values.

Finally, the Missouri Constitution appoints the Secretary of State the custodian of the Great Seal of the State of Missouri. In this capacity, the Secretary of State authenticates and records all official acts of the governor.
