More about Misty Oaks Farm

Misty Oaks Farm, a family owned and operated boarding facility, proudly strives to meet the needs of individuals and their horses. As owners and managers, my daughter and I live on the premises, allowing us to provide the highest quality care and constant attention to all the horses.

Located ½ mile outside the Staunton city limits off Route 262, our well-maintained 39 acre property offers easy access to both I-81and I-64 as well as the area colleges. We welcome all disciplines, retirees, and lay ups. Board includes quality orchard grass hay, alfalfa and Triple Crown feed (can accommodate special requests); blanketing; holding for vets and farriers; and daily turnout. We have three 10 acre pastures with an abundance of green grass and shade, plus two smaller paddocks we call “diet centers” -- all with board fencing. Our 105’ by 210’ outdoor arena is all weather bluestone/sand footing with a full course of hunter jumps. We also have a small cross country course over rolling land and approximately another 400 acres available for trail riding on adjacent properties.

Our Virginia Frame Builders barn is an 11 stall center aisle barn with 12’ by 12’ and 12’ by 14’ stalls containing rubber mats deeply bedded with pine shavings and are kept immaculately clean. Our tack room has both a water cooler and a full-size refrigerator for boarders’ snacks and horses’ treats! Both the tack room and bathroom are heated, and the indoor wash stall has hot and cold water. In the summer, an automatic fogging system makes for minimal flies/ mosquitos and with fans on every stall, we guarantee the utmost comfort for both people and horses alike!!

My daughter, Sarah Dean Duncan, has been involved with horses for 35 years. She is a graduate HA Pony Clubber and was a licensed veterinary technician giving her a vast knowledge of all aspects of horse care. She was a member of the Glenmore Hunt Club and earned her colors as a junior fox hunter. Having been a professional trainer for decades, she has coached from beginner through advanced level riders at both local and A-rated shows. Many of her students have been in the top ten year-end awards in the Southwest Virginia Hunter Jumper Association. She served on the SWVHJA Board and is currently on the Glenmore Hunt Pony Club Board. She is also a volunteer riding instructor, examiner and coach for clinics and Pony Club Rallies. She conducts lessons and training both on and off the farm. Whether you ride for pleasure or to compete, her emphasis is on building a better communication between horse and rider both in the ring and on the ground. She can be reached at 540-448-1606 or e-mail sarahdeanduncan@yahoo.com.

Being a native Stauntonian I grew up riding horses and I too earned my colors with the Glenmore Hunt Club as a junior rider. I wanted my daughters to have the same love so I became more involved than ever! I was the Treasurer, District Commissioner and Board Member during my 30 year involvement with the Glenmore Hunt Pony Club and was awarded the 20+ year Local Legend Award from the United States Pony Clubs. My passion through all the years was the horse showing. I was in the top ten SWVHJA year-end awards for 16 years, and under my daughter’s coaching, I won three year-end Championships and one Reserve Championship with my wonderful mare, Take a Peek! I’m most proud of being inducted into the SWVHJA Hall of Fame – probably because I was the oldest lady to enter the show ring!
