More about Mitchelville Preservation Project

The vision of the Mitchelville Preservation Project is to preserve a portion of the historic site of what was Mitchelville. A central feature of The Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park will be a memorial that commemorates the freedmen's "experiment in freedom." It will include recognition of General Mitchel, who conceptualized the Town, Reverend Murchison, the first Mitchelville Mayor, the 1st Colored U.S. military unit, Harriet Tubman, and 19th century replica buildings, e.g., the prayer house and school.

The project will incorporate the use of state-of-the-art technological and media platforms that present and interpret the story of the freedmen of Mitchelville. Finally, the project also will include a Welcome Pavilion/Center that will hold exhibits, as well as special events.

The re-creation of Mitchelville at Fish Haul Park on Hilton Head will allow visitors to envision Historic Mitchelville as it existed in the 19th century. The site, with its rich indigenous plant life and pristine island atmosphere, will become the Lowcountry's jewel Civil War attraction. It will be designed to inspire and enlighten visitors about the lives of the people and the contributions that the Mitchelville ancestry made to the heritage of freedom.
