Simply put, functional medicine is the future of health care. Many traditional health care providers treat the symptoms of an illness, usually with pharmaceuticals. Disease is often treated as something pre-ordained, a result of genetics or environment. No attempt is made to find a root cause of a problem nor do most physicians consider more nuanced health care practices like diet and lifestyle management. As Dr. Mark Hyman, the president of the Institute for Functional Medicine, noted, this country doesn’t “have a healthcare system. We have a disease management system.”

Functional medicine involves understanding the origins of chronic disease, in the hopes of preventing its onset. If that’s not possible, doctors who practice functional medicine seek more thorough and innovative ways to treat complex disease.
