In 1993, Saint Vincent College and a number of government agencies, conservation organizations, and local foundations created the Loyalhanna Creek Mine Drainage Coalition. The purpose of this coalition was to find a solution to the abandoned mine drainage problem that plagued the midsection of the Loyalhanna watershed. Beginning in 1993 the coalition developed a plan to create three passive treatment wetland systems to treat the mine drainage. Saint Vincent chemistry department collected and analyzed water samples from the discharges. In 1997 and 1998 20 acres of wetland systems were created.
