More about Moundville Public Library

The Moundville Community Library began with one book, a copy of “The Works of Edgar Allen Poe”. This volume was sent to Mrs. Jeff Powers in the spring of 1934 as a bonus book from the Literary Guild. As Mrs. Powers had Poe’s book already, she decided this book should be used to start a library. Mrs. Powers proposed that the Moundville Book Club sponsor the organization of a community library. The club enthusiastically took on the project, and on June 27, 1934, the library began with a Book and Silver Tea held in the south end of Mr. Pat Davis’ store. Fifty-five books and $3.00 were donated.
On January 1, 1936 the library was moved to a room behind the post office which was provided for by the Masonic Lodge.
Mrs. Annie Lavender and Mrs. Minnie Griffin were the first librarians Miss Opal Mills became librarian after Mrs. Lavender and Mrs. Griffin moved.
On August 17 1956, the library was moved to Dr. Griffin’s old office building which was provided for by the town government.
In 1973, the Moundville Public Library moved into the new municipal building.
In August 2010 the library moved into it’s own brand new 3,390 square foot building located at 279 Market Street. The Library Director was Mrs. Linda Davis and Assistant Librarian was Mrs. Mandee Wyatt. In (2011) Mrs. Davis retired and Mrs. Wyatt became the Library Director and Miss Shatonya Hall became the assistant Librarian. In July 2013, Mrs. Wyatt moved away and Mrs. Lindsey Mullins stepped in as the new Library Director with Miss Hall continuing as the assistant. January 2015, Miss Hall resigned and ShaDonya Vanhorn took over as assistant librarian.
