Mt. Lebanon Lutheran Church & School

Mt. Lebanon's original church building was built in 1926. The name was decided upon as a result of the landscape of the area. At the time, it was located at the corner of 57th and Hampton. The area was quite different than it is today; it was surrounded by farm fields, and many, many cedar trees. Cedar trees were used by Solomon in his temple; he imported these trees from Lebanon (1 Kings 5:6), and therefore, Lebanon was chosen as part of the name. As for Mount, well, if you notice, the church is built on a slight hill, therefore Mount Lebanon became it's name. Following large growth of both church and school, the existing building on the corner of 60th and Hampton was erected and the school just two years later.

Mt. Lebanon has historically been a neighborhood chuch. There was a time when you would find the church packed with 500 people, but only 5 cars in the parking lot. People went to the church near them. So near, in fact, that they could walk! While membership has waxed and waned with changes in the neighborhood, the church currently has over 500 communicant members. It supports a Christian Day School housed on two different campuses. Mt. Lebanon Lutheran School participates in the Milwaukee School Choice program, and therefore draws its student base from a much larger population than just the church proper. This presents the school with some wonderful opportunities. Evangelism is certainly enhanced when the student population is drawn significantly from outside the congregation. True to our Lord's great commission, Mt. Lebanon certainly is "Go[ing] and make[ing] disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Matthew 28:19-20
