Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church of Elgin

The Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church was established in 1890. The land was donated by Deacon Green Hennington. A small church building was erected in the community known as Piney. The church remained in the location for many years under Rev. Bivens.

Rev. L. L. Evans pastored the church for many years until his death in 1939.

Rev. George W. Stewart was called to pastor in 1940. World War II erupted and the church had to move from the Piney location for several years. In May of 1944 the present site was purchased from W. M. Gilliams.
Rev. Stewart and the church deacons borrowed the money to purchase the present building from Camp Swift.

In 1958 the church building was paid off. Rev. Stewart had resigned and Rev. H. J. Carrington pastured for a number of years and followed by Rev. Pascal Townsend for about six years in which the fellowship hall was built in his name.

In 1972 Rev. Matthew Carter became the pastor.

In 1980 Rev. R.D. Smith became pastor and during this time air conditioning was added to the church and siding was placed around the church.

In 1987 the church called Rev. Jenkins Humphries who remained until his death. During this time the church purchased a new organ.

Rev. Dave Young became the pastor in 1991 followed by Rev. Kenneth Loggins.

In 1997 Rev. L. B. Evans was called to pastor the church and remained until his death. During this time the church added handicap ramp and sidewalk to the fellowship hall entrance and the church building raised.
In 2011 Rev. Kenneth Loggins returned to become the current pastor. We have added two additional restrooms to the church.

Rev. Nathaniel Cook, took leadership in November 2013.
