Our farm is on the edge of the urban density of Portland, Oregon with beautiful 3 ½ acres. We currently have a small flock of ~120 laying hens. Additionally, we have turkeys, pigs and a few different does to provide milk, cheese, other dairy products as well as fiber.
The crops we will be growing will be available at local farmers market year-round. We will be practicing a closed loop system. Closed loop farming is based on the idea that the whole farm is treated as a dynamic organism. We aim to incorporate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) where implementing basic biological controls such as old fashioned ‘hand picking’ bugs off the plants, using ‘good’ bugs to eliminate the ‘bad’ bugs and appropriate crop rotation practices. One of our major goals is to eventually have no electric or gas powered machinery used in farm production. We aspire to use only horse/mule drawn plow and till for our crops eventually; until then we mostly use a broad fork and shovel for tillage. While this method requires more effort than driving a tractor across the land, it is better for the soil and the environment, reduces fuel dependency and brings us closer to the land and the food we are growing.
