More about Nanoscale Science at Northwest Missouri State University

Nanoscale science is the study and use of materials at the molecular or nanometer level. A nanometer is a billionth of a meter, or approximately one one-millionth the size of the period at the end of this sentence. Northwest Missouri State University offers the first- and still the only-undergraduate program in nanoscale science in the region. In this program, students can declare an emphasis – biology, chemistry, or physics – and specialize in this area. Students gain hands-on experience with multi-million dollar state of the art scientific equipment in the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Additionally, students joining this program can complete undergraduate research and are encouraged to join one of the seven research programs offered:
- Spectroscopy of Metalic Nanoparticles, Fullerenes, and Carbon Nanotubes
- Electronic Motions and Excitations in Nanostructured Surfaces by Ion-Surface and Adsorbate-Surface Reactions
- Germanium Nanoclusters and Organometallic Research
- Transcriptional regulations of genes and synthesis of nanomaterials using biomolecules
- Carbon and boron-based nanomaterials for biomedical, energy, and environmental significant applications
- Atomic Microscopy of Surfaces; Photon Counting Statistics Experimental Development and Ion/Electron Beam Ultra-High Vacuum System Development
- Research in Drug Delivery
