More about Narrow Gate Guernseys

What an extraordinary breed the Guernsey is! For all the characteristics you look for in a diary cow...type, temperament, and milk quality/production...you just cannot beat them.

The first thing that draws you is their appearance. Most notably, their color. I love the markings you see, the splashes of white on those beautiful shades of red, gold, tan, cream, “strawberry blonde”. (I adore even the color of their nose, and that creamy band around it.) And beyond the flashiness of color...I love their type. The Diary Breed Standard encompasses many breeds but in that (bred for) Standard, each has their own notable breed characteristics. For the Guernsey I love the shape and contour of their head, those large wide-open low ears. Soft gentle eyes.

Wonderful traits, and followed right behind that (and what so endears them to you) is their gentle sweet disposition. The ease and openness of their nature. That virtue alone makes them ideal for families looking for a family milk cow.

Here at Narrow Gate Guernseys we hope to offer that to you as a family looking to incorporate a family milk cow into your own home.

Starting before they are even born, we work hard to see that they get the best advantages to longevity and health they can. We are mindful in each breeding, seeking out sires and dams that are not only good milk producers, and true to type, but also those that carry a long clean health history.

Once on the ground they are given the best (loving) attentive care possible. We well know the importance that brings to a young calf (and Mother).

As they grow they are worked with, exposed, and taught things that will help them in their adjustment to your home. Each calf leaves here with the ability to be easily haltered and led. They are taught to load (and unload) from a trailer. Each will have been groomed and kindly handled so the touch of a human is not a scary, ticklish, or worrisome thing. They will be used to having their ears, tail, feet, udder, and teats messed with. And will be able to stand quietly tied, or in a stanchion. All of this done so their transition to your home, and new role, is as easy on them (and you) as possible.

My hope on this page is to share not only my love/dedication for the breed, but helpful information to you as a family who are blessed to have your own Guernsey milk cow.
